'Tis the season to rescue some puppies: $25 pet adoption until Dec. 20 - Greenville Journal

This year is the perfect time to bring home a furry friend for the holidays, as the Empty the Shelters – Holiday Hope pet adoption event is running until Dec. 20.

The annual event reduces adoption fees to $25 or less.

Hosted by BISSELL Pet Foundation, the event has helped more than 67,000 pets find homes throughout the country.

“Shelters are overcrowded and in desperate need of support due to slowed adoption rates and increased length of stay for pets,” said Cathy Bissell, Founder of BISSELL Pet Foundation.

Here are a few of the pups in Greenville looking for homes.

Meet Bucko

  • Terrier, pit bull
  • Male
  • 60 pounds
  • 2 years old

What the shelter has to say about him:

“Bucko LOVES water!!! While I wouldn’t add him to a playgroup, he is easily walked on leash past other dogs with no problems. I’m told he behaved VERY well at GCAC yesterday before and after his neuter!  No trying to attack dogs in other kennels! But he does need to be the only dog in the home. He is definitely decompressing and getting into the routine here. He is always ready for butt scratches and adventure. He is very well behaved — he knows sit. Loves a good squeaky toy!”

Meet Heidi

  • Shepherd
  • Female
  • 57 pounds
  • 5 years old

What the shelter has to say about her:

“We know so much about this sweet shepherd girl. Heidi loves to be around people, and would do best in a home with a family that can spend plenty of time showing her affection!

As far as roommates go, Heidi rates feline friends at 10/10! She does really well with cats, showing gentle and loving behavior. Heidi should be the only canine companion in your home though, as she prefers to soak up all of the stardom around people. Heidi gets excited to play with children. If there are any children in the home they should be older. She can be protective of the people that she loves the most!

Heidi is fully house trained, and crate trained, but can sometimes get lonely. She is heart worm positive, so she will need a comfortable place to rest while she completes her treatment. We are so grateful to the Bissell Foundation for sponsoring her heart worm treatment, so that’s it’s fully funded for her adopters! Once she’s done with that, she will enjoy long walks and time in the sun with her furrever family!”

Meet Sub Zero

  • Terrier, pit bull
  • Male
  • 67 pounds
  • 2 years old

What the shelter has to say about him:

“This loveable boy is a total lovebug and loves to be around people! But most of all more than anything he loves his stuffies! Sub Zero loves treats and hugs! Sub zero is 67 pounds, heart worm negative, and up to date on all his vaccines!”

Meet TuTun

  • Bulldog, mix
  • Male
  • 44 pounds
  • 1 year old

What the shelter has to say about him:

“The first thing you’ll notice about Tutun is his pawsitively adorable smile. He can be a little shy, but he’ll give you a toothy grin when he begins to feel more comfortable! Tutun enjoyed a Doggy’s day out before going into a pawsome foster home! Here is what his foster family has learned about him so far:

Tutun LOVES car rides. He has a gentle demeanor and is VERY smart. He already knows “sit” and “come.” Tutun loves running and hiking, and enjoys the outdoors in general. He’s an excellent sniffer; chicken treats are his favorite! As far as roommates go, Tutun prefers the company of relaxed adults; he is intimidated by the smaller, louder humans (children!)”

Meet Willard

  • Retriever, mix
  • Male
  • 61 pounds
  • 3 years old

What the shelter has to say about him:

“Described as the ‘life of the pawty’ and a cuddle bug, Willard has quickly become a staff and volunteer favorite. Some of his favorite things are car rides and going for runs! This playful pup is looking for a family that would take him on LOTS of adventures, and spend plenty of time playing with him. He is working on his basic commands and leash skills, and is incredibly smart, so training should come easy to him!”

Meet Olivia

  • Retriever
  • Female
  • 77 pounds
  • 4 years old

What the shelter has to say about her:

“Relatively new to the shelter, Miss Olivia is still opening up her personality to us. After some quality ‘recess’ time with volunteers, we have learned about this happy girl!
Olivia never meets a stranger; she is always interested in meeting new people and pups! She does excellently with children, and can hear people approaching the house before they get to the door! Olivia is extremely smart, already responding well to ‘sit’, ‘come’, and ‘fetch.’ She enjoys a quality belly rub, and a game of throwing toys around the yard! She has fantastic leash skills, and would love a home where she could go on plenty of walks before cuddling up!”

There are plenty more pups and cats too looking for a forever home in Greenville.
