MONMOUTH, Ore. – Tresai McCarver was all over the floor making big plays for the Western Oregon University women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon and it showed in the final stat line. McCarver led the Wolves in points, rebounds and assists in helping power WOU to the 68-64 win over Saint Martin's in Great Northwest Athletic Conference play inside New PE Gym.

"We got off to another good start today and had a really balanced attack in the first half.  Our transition was solid and we shared the ball well. Amber played really aggressive early and did a great job defending Claire Dingus.  Saint Martin's is a tough team and we knew they would come out ready to go in the second half," head coach Holli Howard-Carpenter said.

McCarver finished with 18 points, nine rebounds and seven assists in 37 minutes. If that wasn't enough, she added two steals and went 11-13 at the foul line. Madisyn Clark and Amber Winkler each added double-figures in scoring with Clark tallying 15 points and Winkler with 12. Clark added four assists and Winkler had six rebounds.

"I'm really proud of Tresai, she's competing extremely hard and doing whatever the team needs whether it be rebounding, scoring or distributing.  Despite the ever-changing roster and available players, I feel like everyone is doing a good job of being ready when their name is called," Howard-Carpenter said.

It was a great start to the game for the Wolves (5-5, 1-2 GNAC) as they went on a 10-0 run over the first five-plus minutes. Winkler started the scoring for WOU 25 seconds in and then added another layup a minute later for the 4-0 lead. Following a layup by Clark, Makenna Gambee added back-to-back layups for the 10-0 lead. After Saint Martin's (9-3, 1-2 GNAC) hit two from the foul line, WOU went on a 6-0 run with Cali McClave hit a jumper, McCarver added a jumper and Caitlin Wheeler capped the run with a layup for the 16-2 lead. The Saint hit a three-pointer to close the quarter to leave WOU with the 16-5 lead through the first 10 minutes.

The second quarter was closer, but again favored the Wolves. The Saints had the lead back down to 11 when WOU went on a 7-0 run to push the lead to 18. Winkler connected on a three-pointer, Cali McClave added a layup and two free throws by McCarver closed the run that had WOU with the 27-9 lead. Saint Martin's trimmed a couple points off the lead over the final few minutes as WOU took a 29-13 lead into halftime.

The Wolves defense kept Saint Martin's to just a 17.4 percent (4-23) shooting from the field and a 11.1 percent (1-9) effort from three. WOU also forced 13 turnovers over the first 20 minutes.

In the second half, the Saints started to make a run. Midway through the third quarter Saint Martin's had cut the deficit down to nine. WOU responded with the next three points before a 9-0 run by the Saints had the lead down to three. The Wolves again stayed the course and finished the final minute of the third strong. Clark hit two from the foul line and then McCarver beat the buzzer with a three-pointer from the wing to push WOU back out to the 47-40 lead heading to the fourth.

"We had trouble getting shots to fall in the third and had some defensive breakdowns to let them back in the game.  I was proud of how we stayed focused and together down the stretch.  We were able to answer when they went on their run with some big shots by Kaelin Williams-Kennedy, Madi & Cali," Howard-Carpenter said.

Clark had the lead back into double-digits hitting a three-pointer just over a minute in. Saint Martin's answered with the next five points to leave WOU with a 55-50 lead with 7:15 to play. With a couple minutes to play, the Saints had fought back to within a point at 59-58.

Just like earlier in the game, WOU had a big shot to swing momentum. Clark found Winkler who drilled a three-pointer to push the lead back to four. Over the next minute-plus, the Saints hit a layup and then a free throw to pull to within one at 62-61 with 42 seconds to play.

Out of a timeout, WOU was able to get the ball inside to Cali McClave who converted a layup off a nice entry pass by Winkler to move the lead back to three. Following a defensive stop, Alexis Wright went to the line hitting one of two to push the lead to four with 22 seconds to play. After another defensive stop led to two free throws by McCarver, the Saints had one final push with a three-pointer cutting the lead back to three with just under a second to play. Forced to foul, McCarver hit the first free throw to push the lead to four and then collected the rebound off of her second free throw miss to secure the win.

WOU went 22-58 (37.9) from the field, 7-21 (33.3) from three and 17-23 (73.9) at the foul line. The Wolves held advantages in points off turnovers (14-13), second chance points (8-6), bench points (10-8) and fastbreak points (8-2).

In addition to the big games from McCarver, Clark and Winkler, Wright added seven points and five rebounds and Cali McClave had six points, seven rebounds and four steals.

Tierney DeDonatis led the Saints with 21 points, while Rian Clear added a double-double with 18 points and 10 rebounds. WOU held Claire Dingus to just nine points and five rebounds, going 2-5 from the field. As a team, Saint Martin's went 21-53 (39.6) from the field, 7-20 (35) from three and 15-24 (62.5) at the foul line.

WOU will look forward to three more home games this coming week as they will host Alaska Fairbanks on Tuesday night starting at 5:15 p.m. inside New PE Gym.
