Taken together, the quad-county region of Carson City, Lyon County, Douglas County , and Storey County have seen the number of active COVID-19 cases more than triple over the past two weeks.
In Washoe County, health officials have noted a similar increase in the number of active cases. Since March, 1,947 Nevadans have succumbed to the novel coronavirus statewide. Two hundred and twenty-two of those deaths were in Washoe County. Sixty-three Nevada residents have died over the time represented in the graph below.
A Modified Thanksgiving
In light of the recent rise in active cases, state and Washoe County health officials are recommending that residents do not attend or host a Thanksgiving gathering with people outside their household due to risk of COVID-19 transmission and the complications it can have on vulnerable populations.
The risk to the elderly and those with underlying health conditions like obesity and hypertension are significant.
Officials urge residents to maintain gatherings with members of their household and find ways to spend time with friends and family in a non-contact setting, such as through phone or virtually. The recommendation also includes avoiding air travel.
