Freshmen Seminoles dealt defeat in triple overtime - Houston Chronicle

FRIENDSWOOD - Apparently, the Deer Park Freshmen Seminoles can’t experience enough overtime games this season, but they’ve had enough of Trenton Hustok.

The Friendswood Bronco quarterback used his third touchdown during a triple overtime thriller that doomed the Seminoles in a 34-28 TIFI defeat at Centennial Park Saturday morning.

With both teams starting the third overtime from the 15-yard line, the Seminoles went first and were unable to go anywhere, while the Broncos tallied running plays of five, five, two and the knockout punch, a three-yard run by Hustok that finally ended the hard-fought game.

“They (the Seminoles) fought to the last minute. They gave us everything we could handle. When it came through, our boys were just able to make some plays when they had to make them. We focus a lot on conditioning and I think that’s what helped us at the end. It’s knowing how to play when we’re super tired, keeping our heads up and continuing to play hard all the way through the whistle,” said Friendswood Bronco head coach Trey Hutchins.

It was the second consecutive game that the Seminoles were forced to an overtime contest and third overall. It means that 33 percent of the team’s games have resulted in overtime cliffhangers, resulting so far in a 1-2 record.

Overall, the outcome left both teams with 5-4 records and stuck in a massive five-way tie for fourth place with only 32 minutes left in the regular season.

Deadlocked at 14-14 through four quarters, the Seminoles are kicking themselves for letting the victory elude them after the first overtime.

Starting at the 25-yard-line, the Broncos were immediately slapped with a late hit whistle. Three plays later quarterback Davis Horton scored from 10 yards out. Horton then found Joshua Cruz with a two-point conversion pass, giving the Seminoles a 22-14 lead.

But Hustok used the Broncos first play to motor 22 yards. Then on the very next play, the youngster scored the six points. Then with the suspense tightening even more, Hustok ran right and found an open receiver for the tying two-point pass.

The Broncos got the ball first for the second overtime and starting from the 20, Hustok ate up all 20 yards in one play, running right to find a seam and the score. But the ensuing two-point conversion pass was dropped, giving the Seminoles hope.

With their collective backs against the wall, the Seminoles overcame a fumble and a play for negative yardage to tie the game again. Horton rushed for 20 yards during a six-play possession, including a two-yard run to paydirt that tied the game at 28-28.

Horton may be the toughest 8-year-old around. He was shaken up after a four-yard run, stayed in the game, scored his touchdown and was shaken up again, remaining in the game for the third overtime.

In their attempt at a winning PAT, a five-yard penalty didn’t help and neither did the Broncos defense stuffing Cruz for no gain.

The hero on the fumble recovery during that second OT was Ethan Mixon.

The Seminoles entered the fourth quarter, staring at a 14-8 deficit. But with 6:43 remaining in the game, Cruz scored a tying touchdown and that’s how it stood heading into the trio of OTs.

The Seminoles end the regular season by hosting the Baytown Broncos at Abshier Stadium this Saturday. Kickoff is about 9:30 a.m.
