Dear Pet Talk: What holiday foods are safe for dogs to eat? — Shannon, Framingham

Dear Shannon: Great timing on your question, as dogs all over the nation are pricking up their ears at the sound of additional bustle in the kitchen.

First, let’s look at what foods should never be fed to dogs (or cats). Let’s start with the turkey. Do not give your pet poultry bones (choking hazards), or skin (nutritionally unsound).

Garlic and onions contain thiosulphate, which is hazardous. If your dog accidentally eats these, symptoms could include shortness of breath, lethargy, vomiting and diarrhea.

Definitely don’t let your dog taste-test raw yeast dough, as this could rise in her stomach, causing distress.

You already know not to give chocolate to your dog, but add nuts, raisins, grapes, all sweeteners, milk and nutmeg to that list.

However, there are plenty of holiday foods that are safe and healthy. See if your dog would enjoy pumpkin puree, green beans or other greens, cucumbers, bananas and apples (no core or seeds). Dogs also enjoy melon, winter squash, peas and spinach.

If you have a Kong, why not make a mini-Thanksgiving Day feast? Just put some shreds of turkey into mashed potatoes, then add a few green beans and some sweet potato. Give the Kong to your dog as you sit at the table, and your dog will be saying “Yappy” Thanksgiving with joy.

Keeping your dog on a diet that keeps her at the proper weight is good for you, too! So on Thursday, when you’re deep into a turkey coma, prostrated on the couch in front of the football game, your dog will be the only sensible one in the house and will urge you to go for a nice long walk.
Happy T-Day, everyone!
