Washington Nationals’ GM Mike Rizzo on new Triple-A affiliate, the Rochester Red Wings - Federal Baseball

New York State’s Senator, Chuck Schumer, wrote on Twitter this morning about being, “... proud [that] I secured a commitment from the [Nationals] to ensure [a] new Major League affiliate for Rochester Red Wings to keep Red Wings ‘safe at home,’ in Rochester New York.”

“There’s no doubt [the Rochester Red Wings] will keep knocking it out of the park for fans throughout the Rochester Finger Lakes region,” Schumer added.

For the Washington Nationals, a new Triple-A home means no longer having their top minor league affiliate on the West Coast after two years working with the Fresno (CA) Grizzlies of the Pacific Coast League.

That arrangement followed after years of having the Syracuse Chiefs as their Triple-A team.

Now the Nationals are back in Upstate NY, and GM Mike Rizzo, in a statement released by the team this afternoon, expressed his excitement about having the club’s top affiliate on the same side of the country again.

“We are very excited to partner with the Rochester Red Wings and to have our Triple-A affiliate back in the region,” Rizzo said.

“The Red Wings are a well-built, well-run organization that will be an asset to our player development system and we are proud to be a part of Rochester, New York’s rich baseball tradition that dates back to the late 1800’s.”

Red Wings’ President/CEO/COO Naomi Silver released the following statement on the new arrangement on Rochester’s official (MiLB.com) website:

“We are thrilled to announce our new affiliation with the Washington Nationals. With having had only three previous Major League affiliates, this represents an historic change for the Red Wings. I think our fans will enjoy the geographic closeness of the two cities, making it easy to follow their favorite players to the big leagues, and it’s exciting to have this new relationship with the team from the nation’s capital. Even more so, this is a fine organization with great ownership and baseball operations people, and we are looking forward to working with them as we move on to the next chapter in Red Wings history. We want to thank Senator Chuck Schumer for his advocacy of the Red Wings in helping to secure this affiliation by speaking directly with the Commissioner of Baseball and the Nationals’ managing principal owner, Mark Lerner. His support has been very important to us.”

According to their Wikipedia page (and, of course, Wikipedia is an unquestioned source for always completely accurate information) the Rochester franchise was, “... founded in 1899,” and it is, “the oldest continuously operating sports franchise in North America below the major league level.”

Thoughts on the Nationals’ new Triple-A affiliate? And please don’t use the inclusion of the NY Senator’s name above as a reason to make this discussion political, please. Thx. Bye.
