FRANKFURT -- Sales of full-electric vehicles in Germany increased three-fold to 194,163 units in 2020, the KBA motor vehicle authority said, citing the appeal of a more diversified product offering and of more reliable technology.

"E-mobility has become a mainstream feature of the mobile society," the president of the KBA, Richard Damm, said in a statement on WednesdaY.

Electrified vehicles with full or partial electric propulsion reached a market share of 22 percent in the fourth quarter of 2020, signaling that the German government is well on its way to reaching its goal of having 7 million to 10 million registered electric vehicles on German roads by 2030, Damm said.

Full-electric vehicles made up 1.2 percent of all registered passenger cars in Germany at the end of 2020, up from 0.5 percent a year earlier, the KBA said.

VW brand led registrations of full-electric cars with a 20.2 percent share of sales of such models, ahead of Renault with 18.1 percent, Smart with 11.6 percent and Tesla with 11.1 percent.

VW launched the ID3, the first of its ID family of EVs, in September.
