Hornets rookie LaMelo Ball is quickly proving the Hornets made a wise investment with his selection at No. 3.

A night after missing his first NBA triple-double by one assist in a victory over the Pelicans, Charlotte’s LaMelo Ball returned to action Saturday against the Hawks.

Not only did he reach that statistical threshold, he made history in the process.

Ball, the No. 3 pick in last year’s draft, piled up 22 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists — the latter two totals team highs — to lead the Hornets past Atlanta.

LaMelo Ball becomes the youngest in NBA history with a triple-double.

In doing so, he became the youngest player in NBA history to record a triple-double at 19 years, 140 days old.

He surpasses Philadelphia’s Markelle Fultz, who held the previous mark at 19 years, 317 days. LaMelo also has Ball family bragging rights, beating his brother Lonzo (20 years, 15 days) by more than seven months.

Other notable players to post their first triple-double at young ages include Luka Doncic (19 years, 327 days), LeBron James (20 years, 20 days) and Magic Johnson (20 years, 75 days.)

Ball is averaging 11.8 points, 5.7 rebounds and 5.3 assists through nine games.
