The Single-A and Double-A seasons will be delayed but the Triple-A Worcester Red Sox’s inaugural season in Worcester at Polar Park still might start in early April.

MLB sent a memo to minor league teams, telling them Single-A and Double-A players won’t report to spring training until after major leaguers and Triple-A players leave the facilities to begin the regular season, Baseball America reported Tuesday.

That would delay the Single-A and Double-A seasons until May but their season would run through the beginning of October, according to the report. The minor league regular season typically ends in early September.

It still remains unclear if major league spring training camp will start on time in early-to-mid February in the midst of the coronavirus pandemic. USA Today’s Bob Nightengale reported in December that Major League Baseball owners and the MLB Players Association are at odds on a start date for the 2021 season. The union wants to start on time while the owners want the season delayed so all players can receive the coronavirus vaccine before reporting.

J.J. Cooper of Baseball America reported the following:

“The move might mean that Triple-A teams could be set to play a somewhat normal schedule with an early April start date, but there are several issues that could keep that from happening.”

“Most notably, Triple-A schedules will depend on whether MLB teams are still operating in strictly controlled, limited-access ‘bubbles.’ While MLB teams travel on charter flights, Triple-A teams travel on commercial flights. If there are concerns about the risk of Covid-19 transmission on those flights, MLB could return to the alternate site model for the early part of the season until the coronavirus vaccines are more widely distributed and outbreaks around the country are diminished.”

Boston’s Triple-A affiliate spent the past 47 years in Pawtucket, R.I. but will move to Worcester for the 2021 season
