Last season, there were 17 triple-doubles recorded in the NBA G League, but no player had logged one this season prior to Thursday. That all changed when the Rio Grande Valley Vipers took the court to play.
Kevin Porter Jr., who is with the Vipers on loan from the Houston Rockets, notched the first triple-double of the season on Thursday after recording 27 points, 14 assists and 11 rebounds in a 123-113 win over the Erie BayHawks at AdventHealth Arena.
Porter has played in each of the Vipers’ 10 games this season and has emerged as perhaps the best player in the G League. He leads all players in scoring with 23.7 points per game, while he is also averaging 7.4 assists, 5.3 rebounds and 1.6 steals.
Of course, Porter, who was the 30th overall pick in 2019, was traded to the Rockets from the Cleveland Cavaliers on Jan. 22 in exchange for a second-round pick. He did not play with the Cavaliers prior to the trade and was sent to the G League to get acclimated after sitting this season.
By all accounts, Porter has put the off-the-court situation that led to his trade behind him and has fully bought into his new team. He appears to be in a good place now and that has resulted in some outstanding basketball from the 20-year-old.
