LOWER LAKE — A player who has her high school career entirely in front of her got off to an auspicious start Friday afternoon as the Lower Lake High School softball team twice beat back Healdsburg comeback attempts to defeat the Greyhounds 13-5 in non-league action at Lower Lake.
Freshman infielder Rebecca Theodorou, who started at third base in the Trojans’ season opener, ignited an eight-run rally in the bottom of the fifth inning with a bases-loaded triple.
“She’s very talented, a lot of potential,” Lower Lake head coach Brett Doud said of Theodorou. “She’s played a lot of travel ball. By the time she’s a senior she’s going to be really something.”
Theodorou went 2-for-3 in her high school debut, part of the Trojans’ 14-hit attack. Her shot down the left-field line in the fifth inning snapped a 5-all tie and touched off a huge two-out rally.
“Nastiest two-out rally I’ve ever been a part of,” Doud said.
Theodorou’s well-timed hit woke the Lower Lake offense out of its first-game doldrums, according to Doud.
“She smoked it right down the line,” Doud said of the three-run triple that put the Trojans in front to stay at 8-5. “We just had the first-game blues. I feel like out bats are very strong, but we didn’t start hitting the ball until the fifth inning.”
Healdsburg scored three times in the top of the fourth to tie the game at 3-3. Lower Lake (1-0) pushed back in front with two runs in the bottom of the inning only to watch the Greyhounds pull even at 5-5 with two runs in the top of the fifth.
Theodorou’s triple, one of three three-baggers on the day for Lower Lake, made sure Healdsburg wouldn’t catch the Trojans a third time.
Winning pitcher Jessica Hernandez worked scoreless sixth and seventh innings to cap a complete-game effort. She allowed 11 hits hits but also struck out 11.
“She’s very, very consistent,” Doud said of Hernandez. “Her throwing speed isn’t what Shelby Sapeta’s was last year, but she’s close, right there.”
After losing most of his seniors following a 2020 season that was cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic, standouts such as Sapeta, Doud said the Trojans open 2021 with only two seniors on their roster — Deyonsa Higgins and Kayla Doud, daughter of the head coach.
“They loved it,” Doud said of his players’ reaction to finally being able to play a game, something they haven’t been able to do in more than a year. “We had jitters, but once we got going we did fine.”
Kayla Doud went 3-for-5 with a triple and a RBI in the first game of her senior year while junior Sam Edrich went 3-for-5 with a triple and two RBIs. Theodorou and sophomore Nayeli Santana added two hits apiece.
Theodorou, Hernandez, Edrich (center field), Doud (catcher) and Santana (left field) all received high marks from their coach following the team’s season debut.
“Sam made a couple of nice catches in the outfield,” Doud said.
Lower Lake scored single runs in each of the first three innings to open up a 3-0 lead.
The Trojans play three games next week beginning with their North Central League I opener on Tuesday in Middletown at 4 p.m. They return home Wednesday for a 4 p.m. non-league game against Montgomery, then return to league play Friday in St. Helena at 4 p.m.
“It’s good to be back out there,” said Doud, who added that his players weren’t required to protective wear masks in the field but only when returning to the dugout where social distancing is tougher to achieve. “It takes a little bit of getting used to,” he said of the COVID-19 restrictions.
