Johnson & Johnson COVID vaccine likely to return ‘in some manner,’ Dr. Anthony Fauci predicts - MassLive.com

The Johnson & Johnson single-dose COVID-19 vaccine, under a nationwide pause as scientists review reports of extremely rare blood clotting in six women, may return “in some manner” after public health officials meet later this week, Dr. Anthony Fauci predicted on Sunday.

Fauci, the nation’s top infectious disease expert and President Joe Biden’s chief medical advisor, told CNN that officials at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and Food and Drug Administration are ensuring they have “all the information that you need” to make a determination on whether, and when, to bring the vaccine back into circulation.

The pause came just as states and the federal government ramped up vaccination efforts and as COVID-19 cases are spiking across the country. Daily reports of new cases have climbed in recent weeks, with the U.S. now reporting 70,000 per day, which Fauci described as “disturbingly high.”

Fauci said he didn’t “want to get ahead of the CDC,” but that he expected the Johnson & Johnson vaccine to be available for distribution with “either a warning or restriction” for certain groups of people after the agencies’ advisory committee meets Friday.

“I do think we’ll get it back in some manner or form,” he said, noting he didn’t want to see the review extend beyond Friday. “We need to get some decision one way or the other.”

The similarly-structured AstraZeneca vaccine was also linked to instances of extremely rare blood clotting, but in a broader range of individuals, he noted.

“Just to assume on the basis of six (women), that you know everything going on with this, I think would not be prudent,” Fauci said. “So for that reason, they put a pause, take a look, see what’s going on, make sure you know the scope of what’s going on, and then make a decision. Hopefully by Friday we’ll get back on track one way or the other.”

The federal government’s pause on administering the one-shot vaccine will not have a significant impact on the nation’s overall vaccination efforts, according to the White House coronavirus response team. The Biden administration says 3 million people will be vaccinated every day based on existing supplies of the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

In a news conference at the White House last week, Fauci urged Americans to remain calm yet vigilant. He encouraged recent recipients of the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, “Just don’t get an anxiety reaction,” and noted that less than one in 1 million people vaccinated had suffered from the rare and severe blood clotting.

“However, having said that, pay attention,” he cautioned. “Do you have symptoms, headache shortness of breath, anything that resembles a neurological syndrome?”

Before the pause, 181,034 in Massachusetts received the Johnson & Johnson vaccine, according to the state Department of Public Health.
