The Philadelphia Phillies and president of baseball operations Dave Dombrowski may not have to look far if they want to add a reliable reliever to their bullpen for high-leverage situations.
Through four appearances and 3 1/3 scoreless innings at Triple-A Lehigh Valley, right-handed reliever Neftalí Feliz has surrendered just one hit and two walks, while striking out five batters. One-for-one in save opportunities, Feliz has limited opposing hitters to just a .091 batting average.
The Phillies might soon call on RHP Neftali Feliz, who is succeeding at Triple-A.
Feliz signed a minor-league deal with the Phillies in mid-December, however he did not make his spring training debut until March 23 due to visa issues. Notably, Feliz reached 96 miles per hour on the radar gun that outing, according to The Athletic’s Matt Gelb — a positive sign that the nine-year veteran still has something left in the tank.
Last appearing at the big-league level in 2017, the 33-year-old pitched the first six-plus seasons of his career with the Texas Rangers (2009-15) — going 13-10 with a 2.69 ERA, 1.056 WHIP, and 242-101 strikeouts-to-walks ratio spanning 261 1/3 innings. He was named an American League All-Star and Rookie of the Year in 2010, and later pitched for the Detroit Tigers (2015), Pittsburgh Pirates (2016), Milwaukee Brewers (2017), and Kansas City Royals (2017).
The Dominican Republic native pitched parts of the 2015 season under Dombrowski in Detroit. Six years later, Feliz could once again make an impact as part of the front office executive’s bullpen.
Phillies relievers surprisingly have been lights-out since last Sunday, May 9, allowing only one earned run while striking out 17 batters through 18 2/3 combined innings. Starter-turned-reliever Matt Moore was the only pitcher among eight Phillies relievers to surrender a run.
This impressive trend surely is not sustainable, so it is good to know the Phillies have some backup options, such as Feliz, waiting for their call to the show.
