NORTH MANKATO — Morgan Arndt’s three-run triple in the bottom of the ninth inning on Tuesday night led Nicollet to a 4-3 Section 2A softball semifinals win over Sleepy Eye St. Mary’s at Caswell Park.

The game-winning hit kept the third-seeded Raiders alive in the playoffs and sends them on to a rematch with fourth-seeded Springfield on Thursday at Caswell Park. Springfield defeated and knocked the Raiders into the elimination bracket this past Saturday to advance to the section finals.

Nicollet now must defeat Springfield twice on Thursday in order to advance to the state tournament.

Arndt’s triple came with two outs on a liner to left field.

“I just saw it coming right down the middle, and I knew I had to do something with it no matter where it went,” Arndt said.

Hayley Selby relied on her defense behind her in the win in nine innings of work while striking out three.

Megan Ahlness took the loss in 8 2/3 innings of work, striking out five.

Along with Arndt’s bases-clearing triple, Olivia Whitmore added two hits and an RBI to lead the Raiders at the plate.

St. Mary’s was led offensively by Emily Weiss’ two hits.

St. Mary’s struck first in the second inning for a 1-0 lead after an error at second base scored Kallie Zarn. In the bottom of the inning, St. Mary’s turned a triple play after the shortstop caught a liner, tagged the runner at second and threw to first.

Nicollet tied it at 1-all in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI double to center by Whitmore.

After multiple quiet innings at the plate, extra innings were required.

In the top of the ninth, Weiss doubled to center and was pinch-ran for by Addie Hoffmann. A failed bunt led to a popout and two outs before a wild pitch sent Hoffmann to third and an RBI double by Zarn scored Hoffmann for a 2-1 Knights lead.

The Knights then added one more run for a 3-1 lead on an RBI single by Allie Labat.

Nicollet led off the bottom of the inning with an infield single by Leah Bode. Whitmore reached with one out on an error before a bunt single by Brooklyn Gohr filled the bases.

A fielder’s choice throw to home got the second out of the inning before Arndt ended things with her triple.

With two wins over Springfield required to reach state, Arndt said that strong defense and hot bats will be key on Thursday.

“I just think we need to have good defense and keep our bats rolling like we ended with [tonight],” she said.

St. Mary’s defeated Buffalo Lake-Hector-Stewart 10-2 earlier Tuesday to advance to the game with Nicollet. The Knights were led by Labat in that game, who went 3 for 4 with four RBIs. Lacey Mathiowetz got the win against BLHS in 6 2/3 innings, striking out 11.
