With the team’s bench failing to provide much offensive production of late and utility man Mauricio Dubón in a slump at the plate, the Giants have opted to shake up their roster.
The club announced Tuesday that Dubón has been optioned to Triple-A Sacramento while infielder Thairo Estrada was recalled to fill his roster spot.
Dubón hasn’t spent a day in Triple-A since the 2019 season, but the Giants chose to demote him as the versatile right-handed hitter was batting .205 with a .577 OPS in June. The Honduras native entered the season with lofty expectations after becoming the Giants’ primary center fielder during the second half of the 2020 season, but lost playing time in the outfield after Steven Duggar emerged as the Giants’ top option in center this year.
The Giants have used Dubón at third base, shortstop and second base this season, but Estrada is capable of playing all of those positions and was worthy of a call-up as he’s hit .385 with a 1.057 OPS at Triple-A Sacramento this season.
Estrada spent spring training in the Yankees organization, but was designated for assignment early in the year and sent to San Francisco in exchange for cash considerations in a trade on April 11.
Estrada has spent most of his time in Triple-A as Sacramento’s primary shortstop, but he’s also played six games at second base, two at third and made his debut in left field on Monday.
The Giants’ lack of confidence in Dubón became apparent in Monday’s 3-2 loss to the Dodgers when manager Gabe Kapler chose backup catcher Curt Casali to pinch-hit instead of Dubón or outfielder Austin Slater with a pair of runners in scoring position and one out in the eighth inning.
Casali struck out against Dodgers right-hander Blake Treinen and afterward, Kapler explained he chose Casali over Slater without mentioning Dubón as an option in the scenario.
