For a third straight day, the National Weather Service in Binghamton has issued a Heat Advisory for parts of the Twin Tiers.
The local weather office says the advisory is in effect from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. June 30 for Broome, Tioga and Tompkins Counties in New York and Susquehanna, Bradford and part of Wayne Counties in Pennsylvania.
NOAA says maximum heat index values between 95 to 100 degrees are expected again for the hottest part of the day, driving residents to seek relief in swimming pools, splash parks, movie theaters and shopping centers if they don't have adequate air conditioning at home.
Officials again say hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses like heat exhaustion and heat stroke to occur not only for humans but also pets could be susceptible.
The Weather service says the hottest temperatures and heat indices will occur in the lower elevation, river valley locations.
Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.
Take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose fitting clothing when possible. To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location.
Heat stroke is an emergency! Call 9 1 1.
