Rumors of the demise of the local Triple Crown Series have, indeed, been premature.

Staten Island Running and Track Community (SITRAC) president Lorraine Lettieri announced that the series will once again be held, with a slightly different format.

The Triple Crown series is part of a local road-racing tradition, with winners being decided on their finish in three major Island road races.

With the cancellation of the Arielle Newman Run on the Fourth of July and the Celic Brothers Run in early September, it appeared weeks ago that the series was in jeopardy.

However, SITRAC made the decision to continue the three-race series after adding two new races.

In making the announcement, Lettieri noted the “relentless work done by SITRAC in securing a second and third race to complete the Triple Crown lineup.”

The Ollis 5K Run in early June was scheduled to be the first leg. With the race already completed, there were logistical problems, because the Ollis Run did not include age-group finishers.

Joe Venditti and high-schooler Ava Gumb were the male and female overall winners of the Ollis Run.

Rich Re, the race timer extraordinaire, stepped in, and re-scored the race using everyone’s age at the date of the Ollis Run, and separating the finishers into appropriate age categories.

Ollis race director Andrew Guido said, “We are very excited to have the Triple Crown this year.and look forward to working with SITRAC and the other race directors to make their events a success.”

Replacing the Celic Run is the new SITRAC Labor Day Weekend 5K, which will be run at Clove Lakes Park over the newly refurbished cross-country trails on Saturday, Sept. 4.

SITRAC vice-president Bill Allert will be the race director.

“I’m excited that the Labor Day Weekend race will be the first on the new course,” he said.

Allert is no stranger to directing races, having experience as race director for the Athletic Attic races in Brooklyn.

The third race, Michael’s Cause: Step for a Cure 5K, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 19.

The race, with an accompanying walk, is held to raise awareness of Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy.

Race director Rob Capolongo noted, “On behalf of our son Michael Capolongo and everyone at Michael’s Cause, we are extremely grateful and appreciate being part of the Triple Crown series.”
