Division II

No. 3 Mountain View 3, No. 6 Pioneer 2, 9 innings

In a battle between two of the best pitchers in the Bay Area, Mountain View’s Gabe Barrett went all nine innings and struck out 12 for the hard-earned win. He also drove in the winning run with a single.

Barrett was matched against Pioneer’s 6-foot-9 junior Jason Reitz, who went 8⅓ innings before he had to come out because of the 110-pitch limit.

Barrett, who is 5-0 with a 1.56 ERA this season, allowed only four hits, but three came in the Pioneer ninth. That put the Mustangs (13-10) on top 2-0, but Mountain View (15-5) came back in its half of the ninth.

No. 9 hitter Trent Steffen struck out to open the ninth but forced Reitz to throw eight of the 12 pitches he had left. Gene Harris walked, but that ended the game for Reitz.

Trace Thompson singled to put runners on first and second, then John Founds laced a double to right-center that tied the score. Founds raced to third when a pitch skipped past the catcher, then Barrett hit his game-winning single.

Reitz was just as brilliant as Barrett, allowing two hits and striking out 15. He walked two.

Barrett will pitch at Claremont-McKenna College in Southern California next spring.

“He’s one of the better pitchers I’ve ever coached in high school,” Mt. View skipper Kris Mims said. “He has a good arm angle and hides the ball well.”

Earlier in the season he pitched a no-hitter against Wilcox and struck out 17.

Next up for Mountain View will be a visit Wednesday to No. 2 seed San Benito, which edged Bellarmine 4-3. San Benito scored twice in the home half of the seventh for the walkoff win.

No. 8 Sequoia 9, No. 1 Capuchino 6

Sequoia scored seven runs in the top half of the seventh to stun top-seeded Capuchino. The Mustangs, who finished the season 20-5, led 6-1 before Sequoia scored one run in the sixth and erupted in the seventh.

Starting pitcher Dillon Goetz was the star for Sequoia (21-3). He pitched the first six innings, and at the plate drove in the go-ahead runs and had two hits, including a triple.

“Before the seventh, I told our guys if we can get to Kai, I like our chances,” coach Mike Doyle said, referring to Sequoia leadoff hitter Kai Holm.

Sequoia had closed to 6-4 when Holm came up in the seventh. Max McLellan drove in the inning’s first two runs with a double.

Holm’s single to center made it 6-5, then he stole second to put runners on second and third. JP Boyle’s groundout tied the score at 6-6, then after Ben Singler walked, Goetz laced his two-run triple to make it 8-6.

“We played the game at San Bruno Park, and there are no fences,” Doyle said. “We hit three balls that would have been over the fence at our place.”

Holm and Boyle also had triples for Sequoia, and McClellan had the two-run double in the seventh.

Nicholas Balch had a double, two singles and two RBI for Capuchino. Teammate Ryan Lapuyade also had two RBI.
