Why is Kelenic struggling?
Corey Brock, Mariners beat writer: Here's the thing about Kelenic's struggles: Until a week or so, his strikeout rate was OK, and he was making good swing decisions and not expanding the strike zone.
The average (.096) suggests he was overmatched. I'm not sure that was the case. But the struggles were real, and sending him back to Triple-A can let him breathe and relax some.
How can he bounce back?
Brock: At this point, Kelenic, who will turn 22 in July, just needs to play every day and get back to having the same kind of success he's had in the minors. There are no mechanical flaws here or holes in his approach: He just struggled on the game's biggest stage as many have done before him. He'll be back in the big leagues soon enough.
Are the Mariners concerned at all?
Brock: I don't think 83 at-bats in the big leagues — good or bad — are going to change what the Mariners think of Kelenic one way or the other, to be honest.
Certainly, they would have liked it if he started hitting when he arrived in the big leagues in May. We saw some good things at times — the power, the swing decisions, speed on the bases and his defense. He's not a finished product by any means.
