Summer hires providing some relief for restaurants - Jacksonville Journal-Courier

Driving around town or scrolling through social media, the help-wanted ads remain easy to spot, even as a summer influx of college students provides some relief for restaurants struggling to find employees.

Shortened hours, overtime and high turnovers are just a few issues facing restaurants in the area.

“We’ve had more high school and college kids that are applying now,” said Robbie Hocking, owner-manager of Sally’s Chill and Grill at 2209 S. Main St. “We have a couple of college kids that are home on break that are working for us.”

Within two weeks, Hocking was able to hire three new employees for the summer, he said.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor, 5.6% of restaurant workers quit their jobs in April, when there were 1.34 million job openings.

According to a study by One Fair Wage released in May, 76% of restaurant workers are thinking about leaving their jobs because of low wages and tips.

Sal Vitale, manager of Leo’s Pizza at 230 S. Main St., said they’ve seen some improvement in the number of people applying, but they still have a high turnover.

“We’ve seen just a small change,” Vitale said, noting they still have a shortage of employees. “Most are here just two or three day. We do have some help right now.”

Leo’s has had a lot of younger kids apply for positions, Vitale said. In many cases, it is their first job or not what they thought it would be and, after a few days, they quit, he said.

Leo’s has hired several new employees within the past month and began training them, Vitale said.

“Within a week, the are gone because it’s too high-pressure,” he said.

The constant activity and demand of a restaurant is difficult for some, he said.

“Many of them aren’t use to the high pressure that comes with working in a restaurant,” Vitale said. “The help we had before could handle an eight-hour shift. These younger kids aren’t use to it.”

Sally’s now has a full staff, though Hocking expects to be right back in the same position they were a few months ago — short-staffed and overworked — once school resumes in August.

“I hope the economy rebounds in the next couple of months and people will be out applying and we can fill those positions that will be left open by those going off to college and the high school students,” Hocking said. “Hopefully, people will want to get back out and back into the workforce.”
