Triple Digit Heat Indices and the Threat for Severe Weather - WEVV

kmatabunga.blogspot.com

Following an absolutely gorgeous Tuesday throughout the Tri-State, temperatures crept higher this afternoon. We tipped the scales at 85° in Evansville earlier today - fortunately, the oppressive humidity remains out of the picture for the time being. However, that may not be the case much longer; a core of higher pressure that has kept things so clear and comfortable these last 36 hours or so will track southeast of the Tri-State overnight and early tomorrow. As a result, our pleasant northerly wind flow will shift southward, allowing temperatures push higher and opening the door to Gulf humidity. As for this evening, that weak northerly wind will stick around and gradually drive temperatures from 82° around dinnertime to 63° early Thursday.

With the southerly wind flow returning and our sunny skies lingering across the Ohio Valley, temperatures will take another step higher tomorrow afternoon - after reaching 86° around our lunch hour Thursday, peak temperatures will crest near 91°. If that forecast holds, it'll mark our 5th day with 90° temperatures over the last week alone in the River City. Additionally, dew points will hang out between the upper 50s and 60° on Thursday meaning that while hot, it won't necessarily be miserably humid during peak heating hours. The same cannot be said for Friday.

Wind gusts near 25 mph will drive that aforementioned Gulf moisture and humidity right into the Ohio Valley and make things feel downright tropical Friday afternoon. After only dipping into the low 70s early that morning, the combination of partially cloudy skies and strong southerly winds will drive the mercury into the mid 90s for many of us! We'll tip the scales at 95° in Evansville that afternoon, but with dew points nearing 70°, heat indices could climb as high as 100°! On top of all of that, that heat and humidity will fuel chances of showers and storms that evening; some of those storms could pack quite the punch - the Storm Predication Center has placed the northern half of the Tri-State (Evansville and north) under a threat for Severe Weather for Friday evening.
