Dodgers roster: Zach Reks optioned to Triple-A, Jimmie Sherfy activated - True Blue LA

The Dodgers added new reliever Jimmie Sherfy to the active roster on Friday, in their first game after the All-Star break. To make room on the active roster, outfielder Zach Reks was optioned to Triple-A Oklahoma City.

Reks appeared in two games in two days in his second major league stint, this season, scoring a pair of runs while going 0-for-2.

The 27-year-old Reks is hitting .325/.419/.581 with 17 doubles and eight home runs in 42 games in Triple-A this season. In three major league games in two stints with the Dodgers, Reks is 0-for-4 with a pair of strikeouts.

Swapping Reks for Sherfy puts the Dodgers roster back at 14 pitchers and 12 position players heading into a three-game weekend series at Coors Field, the beginning of a stretch of 10 straight game days.

Much like Alex Rodriguez opting out of his contract during the 2007 World Series, the Dodgers on Tuesday turned the baseball world upside down with a roster move during an MLB showcase event by claiming Sherfy off waivers from the Giants. It’s a wonder anyone was able to focus on the All-Star Game, honestly.

Sherfy was a non-roster invitee in Giants camp during spring training, and started the season in Triple-A Sacramento before getting called to the majors in June. He pitched in 10 games in his four weeks with Sacramento, putting up a 4.22 ERA and 5.32 FIP in 10⅔ innings, with nine strikeouts and four walks. He allowed only one run in his first eight appearances with the Giants before allowing two runs in both July games, including two solo home runs.

The Giants designated Sherfy for assignment on July 6.

In parts of four major league seasons (2017-21) with the Diamondbacks and Giants, the right-hander has a 3.21 ERA and 4.11 FIP in 56 innings. Now with the Dodgers, the 29-year-old Sherfy is three-fifths of the way to a full Matt Herges, pitching for every team in the National League West. He also returns close to home, having grown up in Thousand Oaks and attended Newbury Park High School.

Sherfy in his career has thrown his slider roughly half the time (50.4 percent) coupled with his four-seam fastball, making him in the Dodgers bullpen essentially the right-handed version of Garrett Cleavinger.

Sherfy is out of options, having used option years in 2017-19.

Bullpen turnover

Sherfy is the ninth reliever added to the Dodgers’ active roster in the last two weeks. If and when he appears in a game with the Dodgers, he’ll be the 27th pitcher used by the team this season. The franchise record for pitchers used in a season is 31, in 2015, 2016, and 2018.

Once Sherfy appears in a game, he’ll be the 20th pitcher and 17th used in relief in July alone. The Dodgers have used more than 17 pitchers in relief in a single month only twice in their history, and both were with expanded rosters. In September 2016, when the full 40-man roster could be active in the final month, Los Angeles used a franchise-record 24 pitchers and 19 relievers. In September 2020, with 28-man rosters in a pandemic-shortened season, the Dodgers used 18 pitchers in relief.

to date, the Dodgers have only played 11 games in July, and have 15 games left on the schedule this month.
