SPRINGFIELD – The number of patients hospitalized at Baystate Health facilities for COVID-19 has tripled in a month, as infections are rising in the region.
There are currently 104 people being treated at Baystate hospitals in the region and 11 are currently in critical care, Baystate officials reported on Sunday.
“We will continue to closely monitor our curves as state ease restrictions and mass gatherings continue. Careful vigilance will also provide early clues to any potential recurrent surge of the regional pandemic,” the statement said.
On Aug. 15, Baystate Health reported 35 patients hospitalized with COVID-19, five of whom were being treated in the critical care unit. On July 12, Baystate officials reported just five people were being treated with COVID-19, two of whom were treated in the critical care unit.
This is the first time since February, when vaccines started slowly becoming available to the general public, that Baystate officials reported having more than 100 people hospitalized with the disease.
On Feb. 14, Baystate officials reported the number of patients with COVID-19 dropped below 100 for the first time since November. At that point, there were 97 people being treated in the hospitals.
As of Sunday, staff at Baystate Medical Center, in Springfield, is currently caring for 79 of the patients. There are 10 at Baystate Noble in Westfield, 10 at Baystate Wing Hospital in Palmer and five at Baystate Franklin Medical Center in Greenfield, officials said.
