The man might be getting another chance to prove that he can hit. The Milwaukee Brewers made have made a roster move this morning before the series finale in St. Louis, recalling infielder Keston Hiura from Triple-A.
With the division clinched and some regular players slated for rest before the end of the season — including Willy Adames, who is still nursing a bothersome quad — Hiura will come up and potentially get to see some at-bats against big league pitching before the conclusion of the year.
It has been a lost summer for the former top prospect — he was displaced from second base by the arrival of Kolten Wong, struggled to adapt defensively when he was handed the first base job, and seemingly lost the ability to capably hit MLB pitching. Hiura has shuttled back and forth between the majors and Triple-A, hitting only .166/.572/.302 with four home runs in 193 plate appearances for the Brewers. His Triple-A numbers are better — .256/.374/.465 with eight home runs in 206 plate appearances — but that slash is inflated by some very strong early numbers. Since his most recent MiLB assignment started on August 17th, Hiura is hitting .150/.274/.280 in 117 plate appearances. He has gone 8-for-27 with three home runs in his last 8 games, however.
Hiura will take the place of Hoby Milner on the roster, who punched out four and gave up a pair of homers across 2.0 innings in his latest outing. Barring something unforeseen, it’s unlikely that Hiura impacts the postseason much if at all with the Brewers. But he could at least build some momentum to close out the year, and head into 2022 with a clean slate and positive vibes.
