Maxfield, one of the major contenders for the 146h running of Kentucky Derby in September, is out.
The colt suffered a non-displaced condylar fracture in his right front leg during a workout Wednesday morning at Keeneland Race Course in Lexington, Ky. Maxfield was scheduled for surgery later in the day at the Rood and Riddle equine clinic in Lexington.
"We are just very disappointed for everybody," trainer Brendan Walsh said by phone from Keeneland Wednesday. "This is a tough one to take."
Maxfield, who is owned by Godolphin, was undefeated in three career starts. In his first race this year, he won the ungraded $150,000 Matt Winn at Churchill Downs on May 23. He had last raced Oct. 5, winning the Grade I, $500,000 Breeders' Futurity at Keeneland. An ankle injury forced him to miss last year's Breeders' Cup Juvenile at Santa Anita.
The horse is a son of 2007 Kentucky Derby and Travers winner Street Sense.
On Wednesday, he worked four furlongs at Keeneland in 49 seconds. Walsh said he noticed the horse was a "little off" when he came back to the barn. Tests were taken and the injury was disclosed.
The injury is not life threatening and Walsh said the horse could return to racing next year.
"He is a super-talented horse," Walsh said. "I feel terrible for him."
Maxfield joins a growing list of horses that have been recently been taken off the Triple Crown trail because of injury. Two of Hall of Fame trainer Bob Baffert's runners, Nadal (leg, retired) and Charlatan (ankle, could return) are out. Also on Wednesday, trainer Brad Cox announced that Louisiana Derby winner Wells Bayou is off the Triple Crown trail because of bone bruising.
