For the first time in a decade, Triple-A is forecasting a dip in the number of people who are planning to hit the road for summer road trips.
Triple-A says that Americans will take 707 million trips between July 1st to September 30th of this year, based on economic indicators and state re-openings. That represents a 15 percent decrease from the numbers from July through September of last year. Trends are showing that those who are headed out for summer trips are doing so cautiously and in a more spur-of-the-moment fashion. Representatives say that they see people taking more weekend trips, with car trips accounting for 97 percent of the favored transportation mode, representing 683 million trips by car. That represents a roughly three percent decrease from last year.
Significant decreases are seen for other modes of transportation. For air travel, Triple-A expects 15.1 million trips, which is a decrease in 73.9 percent from last year. 9.3 million are predicted to go by train, boat or other conveyance, which is an 85.5 percent decrease from last year.
Because of the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic on travel, Triple-A did not release their traditional Memorial or Independence day travel forecasts.
