A man was killed in a triple shooting around midnight near the shopping center at South Carrollton and Tulane avenues, the New Orleans Police Department reported.

The deadly shooting was the area’s second violent crime in a little over 12 hours, police reports show. A few blocks away, a man was pistol whipped in the middle of the day Saturday during an armed robbery.

In the homicide, NOPD Third District officers responded to calls of a shooting Saturday at 11:59 p.m. near the strip mall in the 4100 block of South Carrollton Avenue. They discovered two male victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Both victims were transported to the University Medical Center by the Emergency Medical Service.

One victim, a 28-year-old man, had been shot in the head. He was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The second man, 25, had been shot in the leg and was reported in stable condition Sunday morning. A third victim, 23, was not at the scene when police arrived but was driven to the hospital for treatment.

The men were acquaintances, police said. The three were involved in a verbal altercation with another man when weapons were produced and shots were fired.

No additional details are available at this time. The Orleans Parish Coroner’s Office will identify the victim and official cause of death upon completion of autopsy and notification of family.

Earlier in the day, an armed robbery took place in the 4200 block of Ulloa Street. In that incident, the victim, a 35-year-old man, was standing on Ulloa near Solomon Street when he was approached from behind and pistol whipped. The attacker then grabbed his backpack and fled.

The zone around Tulane Avenue has remained a hot spot for crime, according to data from the Mid-City Security District, even as the corridor undergoes a renaissance spurred by the new medical complex.

Anyone with information on the triple shooting is asked to contact NOPD Homicide Unit Detective Walter Edmond at 504-658-5300. If you have information on the armed robbery, call the Third District at 504-658-6030.
