Staff with the Umpqua National Forest has announced that some campgrounds are reopening as of Friday.
Mark Turney said all campgrounds will be available by advance reservation through www.recreation.gov. No payments will be accepted at the campground. Reservations can now be made and must be made two days in advance of the intended visit. Turney said local district offices have no ability have to make reservations for you. Unless notified, all existing reservations are still valid.
In the Diamond Lake Ranger District, Boulder Flat, Toketee Lake and Poole Creek are opening. Rujada campground is reopening in the Cottage Grove Ranger District.
Turney said to align with Governor Brown’s executive order directing people to Stay Home, Save Lives, the Umpqua National Forest will continue the closure of developed recreation sites that have not been mentioned such as Umpqua Hot Springs and its access trail, South Umpqua Falls. All cabin rentals and fire lookouts remain closed as well.
Forest personnel are working to reopen other campgrounds in the forest in the coming weeks, but must first mitigate seasonal storm damage and remove trees which pose a safety risk to the public.
Umpqua National Forest Supervisor Alice Carlton said “we are continuing the process of assessing the areas that remain closed and determining when we can safely open them again for the public”.
