Overwhelmed computers cause hours-long delays at some Riverside County voting sites - Press-Enterprise

Voting in Riverside County was delayed by tech problems on Saturday, Oct. 31.

Computers that poll workers use to verify some voters’ eligibility were slowed to a crawl by the high number of voters at various locations, the county said.

“It’s because of the volume,” said Brooke Federico, a county spokeswoman.

The machines that voters use to cast ballots are working properly, she said.

Earlier, state Sen. Melissa Melendez tweeted that voting machines in Riverside County stopped working Saturday. Melendez, R-Lake Elsinore, posted the message at 12:06 p.m.

“Voting machines in Riverside County are down. We are working on finding out what the problem is and when the registrar will have this fixed. This is completely unacceptable,” she wrote.

While Federico said that was not the case, the computer overload led to hours-long waits in some places.

The delays were experienced at some of the 130 voter assistance centers, she said. She could not immediately say how many people were affected.

Those who show up to vote without the ballot that was mailed to them must have their registration verified, Federico said. Those who have the ballot with them do not need to go through that step.

Some voters having to wait for long periods may be offered a provisional ballot, and their eligibility to vote will be determined later.

The county identified issues causing “intermittent” delays and was resolving them, Federico said.

“Tomorrow (Sunday), we expect all voter assistance centers to process faster, with fewer delays,” Federico said in a statement.

“We are asking people to be patient,” she said.

Some voters said in Facebook posts that they were unable to cast their ballots in person Saturday.

“Waited over 2 hours in Murrieta then gave up. We ended up filling out our mail-in ballots and dropping those off. Really wanted to vote in person. Oh well,” wrote Christine Withers.

And wrote Julia Calmelat: “My grandma and husband were there at 8 am dealing with this and are still there and have not voted. They said to come back tomorrow!!!”

Poll workers at two Riverside locations, the Arlington Library and Arlanza Community Center, said the problems began immediately when they opened at 9 a.m. Both sites had voters already in line there, and the crush led to the computers having difficulty connecting to the internet.

One poll worker at Arlington described the glitch as a “cough” and said some voters had to wait about an hour. Schera Harner, the supervisor at Arlanza, described it as a “little hiccup.” She said no voters were turned away there. She said she didn’t know precisely what the county was doing to speed up the computers.

Poll workers at both locations said things were running smoothly by 11:30 a.m.

“You do what you have to do and go forward,” Harner said.

Early in-person voting began in Riverside County on Oct. 5. Ballots may be cast at the Registrar’s office at 2724 Gateway Drive in Riverside or at scores of voter assistance centers on Sunday and Monday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as on Election Day.

Completed ballots may be dropped off at an assistance center or the Registrar’s office. Mailed ballots will be counted as long as they are postmarked by Tuesday.
