MOREHEAD, Ky. – A pair of near triple-doubles and numerous career-high efforts highlight Morehead State women's basketball's victory over Transylvania Tuesday night at Johnson Arena as the Eagles downed the Pioneers 75-62 behind a pair of double-doubles and 10 career-highs.
Morehead State's win was sparked on the defensive end as the Eagles forced 30 turnovers, forcing a miscue on 35 percent of Transylvania's possessions Tuesday. The Eagles turned the turnovers into 37 points, including numerous points coming off the team's 21 steals. Morehead State also blocked 12 shots on the defensive end, marking the most by an Ohio Valley Conference team in a game this season, setting the mark for the third time in four games.
Redshirt sophomore Lauren Carter and sophomore Ariel Kirkwood were catalysts defensively, recording eight steals and seven blocks, respectively, as the pair each neared a triple-double in the game. The eight thefts for Carter tie what is believed to be a school record, joining the likes of Chyna Bozeman, Almesha Jones, and Eriel McKee with eight steal games.
The duo also paced Morehead State offensively with Cater posting a career-high 18 points while Kirkwood added 16 of her own, with both totals being game-highs. The pair also worked the glass, combining for 21 total rebounds with Carter grabbing a career-best 11 and Kirkwood corralling 10.
In addition to Carter's three career-highs, redshirt sophomore Gabby Crawford (blocks), freshman Morgan DeFoor (points), junior Ellie Jo Johnson (steals), sophomore Lai'Janique Perry-Ellis (assists), and redshirt sophomore Darryn Zeigler (blocks, points, and rebounds) all tied or set career-highs in the Morehead State victory.
The Eagles return to the court Thursday evening, travelling to the Music City to take on Lipscomb. The game replaces Morehead State's scheduled game with Marshall that was cancelled due to NCAA Covid-19 protocols. Tip-off between the Eagles and Bison is set for 3 p.m. ET.
