Jeimer Candelario hit a two-run triple to break a scoreless tie in the sixth inning as the Detroit Tigers beat the Cincinnati Reds 4-1 Sunday afternoon at Great American Ball Park.

The Tigers (65-73) took two of three from the Reds (73-65), who are fighting for a playoff spot.

Akil Baddoo led off the sixth with a hustle double and went to third when Robbie Grossman reached on an error. Then Candelario shot a ball just inside the right field line into the corner to score two runs.

Had he stopped at second, Candelario would have logged his league-leading 40th double of the season. Instead, he got his third triple. He now has a career-high 55 runs batted in with another month still left in the season.

Candelario scored on a sliding play at the plate on Eric Haase’s sacrifice fly.

The Tigers picked up an insurance run in the eighth, again started by Baddoo, who drew a lead-off walk.

Baddoo was running on the pitch and had already rounded second base when Jonathan Schoop’s blooper landed in shallow center. Third base coach Ramon Santiago never hesitated in waiving him home and Baddoo managed to score all the way from first on the play.

Tigers starter Casey Mize pitched three perfect innings in a shortened start designed to limit his overall workload. Jose Ureña had more traffic on the base paths, but still managed to pitch 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.

Things got interesting in the eighth inning, which started with a 13-pitch battle between Tigers reliever Jose Cisnero and Max Schrock.

Schrock drew a walk and after a one-out single, manager A.J. Hinch turned to Gregory Soto for the five-out save.

Things started inauspiciously. Soto threw a wild pitch to allow a run to score and then walked pinch-hitter Asdrubal Cabrera. But he came back to get huge strikeouts of Nick Castellanos and Joey Votto to end the Reds’ last big threat.

BOX SCORE

Up next: The Tigers open a three-game series at Pittsburgh against the Pirates on Monday at 1:35 p.m. Tigers lefty Tarik Skubal (8-12, 4.26 ERA) will face right-hander Bryse Wilson (2-6, 4.61).
