After 3 weeks of Red Flag Warnings, we're finally seeing some relief! - KKTV

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (KKTV) - It took 3 weeks, but we’re finally here! No Red Flag Warning in the state for Sunday! What’s felt like non-stop wind for most of the month has really been that across southern Colorado. We’re finally getting a breather from talking about fire danger, but it will be important to remain cautious as most fuels are still very dry.

We’ll be seeing a lower fire danger today due to a few factors: There’s some more moisture in the air, it’s cooler out and we even have a chance at some rain and snow this evening. That precip chance will be sparked off by an upper-level wave that is situated over the Colorado/Utah border this morning. This wave will kick eastward through the day, increasing chances for rain and snow this afternoon, especially west of I-25. We’re thinking the I-25 corridor will get in on some of this, especially into the evening.

It’s not going to be a ton of moisture and this system as a whole doesn’t have a bunch of water to work with. In general, 2-4″ of snow is expected into the hills west of I-25, with some localized higher amounts up to 6″ possible (Woodland Park, Florissant, Divide areas). Most of the snow that accumulates will be on grassy and elevated surfaces. For the rest of the Pikes Peak Region, accumulations are a little more likely in northern El Paso county, especially above 6,500′. For downtown Colorado Springs and out near the airport it will be mostly rain with some wet snow possible this evening after sunset.

In terms of the southern I-25 corridor, the Sangres and the Wet Mtns will do the “best” with this system -- not all that much. We’ve painted a general 1-4″ of snow for the mountain to the southwest of Pueblo. Should stay all rain over the eastern plains along HWY 50.

So... how is the rest of the week shaping up? Not great news. This little junk storm coming through today and tonight might be our best shot at moisture for at least a week. What’s looking a little bit better is our wind situation. There’s a big bubble of high pressure set to build over southern Colorado this week. It will warm us up and keep the weather pattern quiet. 10-20 mph winds hang around the area through midweek, with some stronger winds on Friday afternoon as a cold front passes off to our north.

Fire danger concerns will likely start to pick up towards the end of the week.
