FLINT, MI – A Flint man stands to face life in prison without the possibility of parole after a Genesee County jury convicted him on three murder charges stemming from a 2019 triple homicide in Flint.

Quatrail T. Smith was found guilty of three counts of first-degree premeditated murder, four counts of felony firearm and one count each of felon in possession of a firearm and carrying a concealed weapon.

“This is yet another tragic incident where gun violence in our community cut short the lives of three young men and will put another in prison for the rest of his life,” Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton said in a statement.

The trial began on April 6. The jury began deliberating Tuesday, April 12, before reaching its verdict on Wednesday.

According to trial testimony, police from the Flint police department, Michigan State Police and Genesee County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to a house on Illinois Avenue – between Olive and Iowa avenues – following reports of a shooting.

Police found the bodies of three men upon their arrival. One body was in the backyard, another on steps leading to the back door of the house and a third was found in a bedroom inside the home.

The victims’ ages ranged from 16 to 18.

An investigation by police led them to several suspects, including Smith, who they arrested the following day.

Smith was charged in September 2019, along with Jovana Christina King and Shiron Shirell Hamlet, all of Flint.

King was charged with carrying a concealed weapon and two drug possession charges, while Hamlet is charged with one count of carrying a concealed weapon.

King’s case is still pending in Genesee County Circuit Court. Hamlet’s charges were dismissed before making it to Circuit Court.

Smith is scheduled to be sentenced on May 16 before Genesee County Circuit Court Judge Celeste D. Bell.
