KNOXVILLE, Tenn. & ROCHESTER, Mich. (EMUEagles.com) – Eastern Michigan University track & field is set for a challenging week as the team treks to Knoxville, Tenn. for the Tennessee Relays, April 7-9, Coral Gables, Fla. for the Hurricane Alumni Invitational, April 8-9, and Rochester, Mich. for the Golden Grizzlies Invite, April 8-9. The three-day meet, hosted by the University of Tennessee, will take place on the Tom Black Track at LaPorte Stadium. Action each day in Knoxville, Tenn. is set to begin at 11 a.m. In the Sunshine State, the Eagles will start the competition at 11 a.m. on Friday and 11:30 a.m. on Saturday. Meanwhile back in the Mitten State, Friday's meet is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. while Saturday's events begin at noon.
Eastern last participated at the Tennessee Relays in 2019, where both teams saw great success. Former Eagle Derek Ziegenfuss set EMU's javelin throw record with a heave of 69.78m, April 11. Micah Johnston, a 2021 graduate, finished second in the 200m dash (23.93w) and third in the 400m dash (54.06) in the Volunteer State, April 12.
In this year's NCAA Indoor Championships, UT's men placed third while 11 Volunteers earned All-America honors. Meanwhile, the women's team had five All-Americans and finished 16th overall.
The Eagles made the trip to Coral Gables, Fla. two weeks ago for the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational, March 26. At the University of Miami, the EMU sprinters, jumpers, and throwers produced solid marks across the board, highlighted by a then-school record shot put of 15.51m from senior Kadian Clarke (Kingston, Jamaica-Immaculate Conception) and 2.06m high jump efforts from freshman Brendan Hill (Huber Heights, Ohio-Wayne) and sophomore teammate Ousman Kamara (Coatesville, Pa.-Coatesville)
The Green and White competed at Oakland University's Golden Grizzlies Invite last year, sending a small group to Rochester, Mich. In the men's 1500m race, the harriers took eight of the top nine spots, paced by then-freshman Linus Vennemann (Osnabrück, Lower Saxony, Germany-Gymnasium "In der Wüste") with a personal-best time of 3:54.44. Junior Kaitlyn St. Bernard (Newport, Mich.-Jefferson) took fourth in the meet's 5000m competition, clocking in at 18:06.21.
The EMU throwers hope to keep building after a great weekend at the Spartan Invitational, April 1-2. Clarke captured the shot put crown with a 15.63m heave, the best outdoor throw in school history, topping her 15.51m effort set at the Hurricane Collegiate Invitational, March 26. Additionally, the senior won the hammer throw (55.64m) and discus throw (45.05m) competitions.
Junior Newlyn Stephenson (Gary, Ind.-Thea Bowman Leadership Academy) was the top collegiate competitor in the men's hammer throw, finishing second overall with a toss of 63.96m, .01 meters off from tying his career-high.
The Tennessee Relays can be streamed on ESPN+ on Friday at 11 a.m. and 2:30 p.m., and Saturday starting at 11 a.m.
Following this week's meets, the Eagles will head to the West Coast for the Bryan Clay Invitational hosted by Azusa Pacific University, April 13-15. Additionally, other members of the team will remain in Michigan for Siena Heights University's Don Kleinow Invitational, April 15.
