AUGUSTA, N.J. — Despite turning a triple play, the Tri-City ValleyCats dropped a 6-2 Frontier League decision to the Sussex County Miners on Sunday at Skylands Stadium.
The ValleyCats turned the triple play in the third inning. Errol Robinson led off with a single, and Will Zimmerman walked. ValleyCats starter Ryan Williamson then got Martin Figueroa to hit a grounder to third baseman Juan Silverio. He stepped on third for the first out, then threw to second baseman Jace Mercer to get Zimmerman. Mercer then threw to first baseman Brad Zunica to get Figueroa.
The Miners scored five times in the fourth. It was highlighted by Nick Garland’s three-run double.
The ValleyCats, who only had two hits, avoided the shutout when Denis Phipps hit a two-run homer in the ninth.
Tri-City visits the New York Boulders for an 11 a.m. game Tuesday.
