The number of illegal border crossings into the United States from Canada nearly tripled in 2019, according to statistics obtained by The Associated Press.
The numbers jumped from 558 people arrested at the northern border in 2018 to 1,586 in 2019. Many of those illegally crossing the U.S.-Canada border — 28 percent — were people from Mexico. The previous year, only 20 people from Mexico were apprehended at the northern border.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials told the AP that the reason more people are choosing to immigrate through Canada is because of more lax security and recent changes to travel.
In 2016, Canada lifted its requirement that Mexican citizens apply for visas to enter the country, as part of efforts to strengthen relations with Mexico. In 2017, a similar change for Romanian citizens took effect.
Romanians, Haitians and Indians were among the other nationalities of people apprehended.
Apprehensions at all borders have dropped since the coronavirus pandemic hit the United States. The U.S. reported it apprehended 98.5 percent less people in April than it did the previous April.
