Just when you thought another Redding summer was here for good, forecasters are expecting a "pretty wild" swing from triple digits back down to the low 70s, with rain and thunder also possible over the weekend.
The area doesn't start hitting 100 degrees until June 8 on average, said Cory Mueller, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Sacramento. But it's still typically pretty close to the triple digits in the weeks before that, Mueller said.
This year, the late-May weather is expected to be all over the map.
The Redding area is forecasted to be over 100 degrees through Thursday and nearly as hot Friday, but the weekend will bring a major drop, Mueller said.
"We’re going to see a pretty wild swing in temperatures from Friday to Saturday," he said. "You’re looking at a 30-degree swing in high temperatures, so it’ll feel cold out come Saturday for sure."
Even more jarring — the overnight lows throughout the week are supposed to be even warmer than Saturday's high.

"There won’t be a ton of relief from the heat, even at night," Mueller said, noting the lows are expected to be in the low 70s while Saturday's high is forecasted at 70 degrees even. "It’ll be quite the wild weather, to be honest."
With such a late mild and rainy spell for Redding, Mueller said there's a chance it'll be the city's last for some time.
"70 at the end of May, you know, is pretty unusual," he said.
And while the heat will also be unusual for the time of year, it's not expected to be record-breaking. Mueller said the Redding area has hit up to 108 degrees this time of year.
It'll still be hotter than normal, but Mueller said it's important to note that local waterways are still dangerously cold.
That issue came to a head on May 5, when authorities rescued a group of rafters celebrating Cinco de Mayo after they called 911 saying they were getting too cold and tired to make it out on their own.
