Houston is getting its first taste of sizzling summer weather this week as forecasters anticipate temperatures to climb into the triple digits.

Houston’s Hobby Airport and Bush Intercontinental Airport hit the low-90s by Saturday afternoon and is expected to rise slightly to the mid-90s, according to the National Weather Service. Lows for the week will reach the mid to upper 70s. 90-91 degrees, mid-90s.

“This is our first real heat wave of the year,” said Patrick Blood, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service. “We haven’t seen temperatures quite this warm since last summer.”

Inland parts of Southeast Texas will peak at more than 100 degrees on Tuesday - particularly in the areas west of I-45 in the Brazos River Valley. Thermometers in the City of Houston will top out around 98 degrees at the beginning of the week, while Bryan and College Station are expected to reach 101 degrees.

Higher humidity will make those scorching temperatures feel hotter, with heat indices topping out up to 10 degrees higher, Blood said. No heat advisories have been issued yet.

Southeast Texas is expected to dodge most of the impact from Tropical Storm Cristobal, which was due to hit Louisiana Sunday evening. However, beachgoers will likely see sea level five to six feet above average, and six to nine-foot swells off the coast, forecasters said.

A rip current risk has been issued through 7 pm Sunday for Brazoria Islands, Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula.

“If you get into the water, stay near a lifeguard and stay away from rocks and jetties,” Blood said.

Some isolated thunderstorms and rain may form east of I-45 and along the coast. But chances of rain remain below 20 percent, Blood said.

A cold front expected Wednesday could bring temperatures back down to the mid-90s.
