Some RCSD Teachers Express Concerns About Hybrid Model - Spectrum News

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — More than 300 students in the Rochester City School District are set to go back into the classroom on Tuesday for the first time since March.

That has some teachers feeling uneasy.

"I'm eager to see my students," said Kristen French, who teaches at the Children’s School of Rochester.

Some of her students are headed back into the classroom as a part of phase one of moving into a hybrid learning model.

"Overwhelmed, stressed. I feel unprepared," said French.

French says she feels that way because the district had only announced this move a little more than two weeks ago.

That's why a petition was created requesting the superintendent pause the transition.

She explains they shouldn't go back until the staff is trained in COVID-19 safety and has had time to prepare their classrooms. Some students will be there in person and others remote.

"... Being able to hear the instruction going on with the background noise and also having to wear a mask and the camera view will be interesting because it's very limited, because it only shows a certain portion of the classroom," said French.

Teachers like Meagan Harris, who wouldn't have to go back until phase three, have other concerns about a potential return to the classroom.

"I don't know how we would socially distance if I had to go back. I know that some of the rooms in our building don't have cross ventilation so without having all of the information. I would not be comfortable with that," said Harris.

Superintendent Dr. Lesli Myers-Small explained the medical community has stated that schools are among the safest places for a child to be.

She added that RCSD staff members have worked hard to make sure all of the schools are ready.

"Our phased approach, I believe, is the right way to go, and we are going to move forward, but again, we will continue to monitor if things change from the governor or the county then we will make those necessary adjustments," said Dr. Myers-Small.

Harris is not so sure that schools are safe.

"Our schools are not open so you can't say that the schools are the safest. We don't know that because we haven't been open since March," said Harris.

While many teachers have reservations about returning to class, Maggie Kelly, who teaches at Leadership Academy, says she would go back for one simple reason.

"If my position were called back to school and my building was open, I would go back because I would much rather be with my students. But I would do it a little more reluctantly now than back in September," said Kelly.
