Like water temperature and wave heights, lifeguard pay varies up and down the Jersey Shore. But for the most part, despite its critical importance and unique health risks, lifeguarding in the Garden State is a low-paying job, typically not much higher than the minimum wage and sometimes exactly that.
An analysis of hourly wage data obtained from 36 Jersey Shore municipalities by NJ Advance Media through Open Public Records Act requests found that lifeguard starting pay in 2020 averaged $12 an hour, which happens to be the current minimum wage for most workers in New Jersey.
