The Mets made a number of roster moves prior to tonight’s game against the Atlanta Braves. The team recalled Patrick Mazeika from Triple-A and made room for him by optioning Brandon Drury to Syracuse. Zack Scott originally made it sound like Michael Conforto would be activated for tonight’s game, but that did not turn out to be the case.
Mazeika’s return could signal a future IL stint for Tomás Nido, who was hit on the wrist during the first game on Monday’s doubleheader, looked visibly uncomfortable while rounding the bases, and eventually exited the game. In 14 at-bats for the club, Mazeika recorded three hits but became something of a cult hero for his two walk-off fielder’s choice grounders. He will take the spot of Drury, who has eight hits in 44 at-bats.
The pitching-depleted Mets also acquired some additional depth, adding the former Cub Stock. He made a start against New York last week, allowing five earned runs on four hits with six walks and three strikeouts in four innings. He has been sent to Triple-A after getting claimed by the club.
The team also announced some injury notes prior to tonight’s game, first confirming that Joey Lucchesi will have Tommy John Surgery on Thursday. The left-hander miss the remainder of the 2021 season. Lucchesi will likely not return until very late into the 2022 season, and could miss all of next year as well as he recovers.
After landing on the IL with a lat tear yesterday, Scott confirmed that Robert Gsellman will not throw for at least six more weeks, which means the earliest he can return is mid-August if all goes well. In more positive news, Dellin Betances, who is currently rehabbing, could be back in late June or early July according to the team’s general manager. Meanwhile, while Nimmo continues to rehab and should be back soon, Scott revealed that J.D. Davis should be starting up a rehab assignment in the next week or two.
