Rays Triple-A pitcher Tyler Zombro was in stable condition at a Durham, N.C., hospital undergoing further treatment and observation after being hit in the head by a line drive in Thursday’s game.
Zombro, 26, had just come into the game in the eighth inning when he was hit by a line drive from the first Norfolk batter, Brett Cumberland.
Per a tweet from Chris Lea of WRAL-TV, Zombro “fell face first and started convulsing on the ground,” then was taken off the field on a stretcher, as other players were “praying and kneeling on the field.”
Play was halted at the time, with Norfolk leading 12-4, and was not resumed.
In a statement, the Rays said: “Tyler Zombro was transported to Duke University Hospital in Durham and is in stable condition. He is currently undergoing further treatment and observation. Additional updates will be provided as they become available. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tyler, his family and his teammates.”
Zombro has been in the Rays’ organization since 2017, signing as an undrafted free agent from George Mason University. He worked his way from the Gulf Coast League to rookie-level Princeton in 2017, spent 2018 at Class A Bowling Green, then took a big step in 2019, moving to Double-A Montgomery and then Durham, named the team’s minor-league reliever of the year.
He was invited to major-league camp in 2020 and 2021. While pitching for the Rays, he has also worked as the lead throwing trainer for the R&D Baseball Academy near Washington D.C, watching video and reviewing advanced analytical data reports to formulate training programs for high school and college pitchers.
