WASHINGTON — The Astros optioned struggling utilityman Niko Goodrum to Class AAA Sugar Land on Sunday, clearing a spot on their 26-man roster for new acquisition Mauricio Dubón.
Goodrum appeared overmatched in his sporadic playing time, rendering him almost unplayable during May. He started on Saturday out of dire necessity when both Jose Altuve and Jeremy Peña sat out with nagging injuries. Goodrum finished the 13-6 loss 0-for-4 with three strikeouts.
“He’s talented. He’s likable. It just wasn’t working at that time,” manager Dusty Baker said. “We wanted him to go back and get some more (at-bats). It’s tough on the extra guys, especially this year was very tough. That’s the toughest job in baseball, especially with the lockout.”
Baker blamed, in part, the lack of spring training at-bats as a reason for Goodrum’s awful start. Goodrum struck out 23 times in his first 45 plate appearances this season. His profound struggles almost forced general manager James Click to acquire Dubón from San Francisco on Saturday.
Click signed Goodrum to a $2.1 million major league contract this spring after the 30-year-old infielder passed unclaimed through outright waivers.
