EATON COUNTY, MI – A man accused of fatally shooting three family members in 2021 will need to complete a second mental evaluation before standing trial, officials said.
Daniel James Sougstad, 23, of Lansing, was ordered in March to undergo an evaluation for criminal responsibility at the Center For Forensic Psychiatry near Saline.
Sougstad stands charged of three counts each of open murder and felony firearms, stemming from the fatal shooting of John, Barbara and Ryan Sougstad -- respectively identified in court as the defendant’s father, mother and brother -- in their Eaton County home in September 2021.

As of May 27, no further court dates have been scheduled while the evaluation is underway, according to the Eaton County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office.
The evaluation for Sougstad was ordered on March 24, and prosecutors have not received a further update in the past two months, officials said.
Sougstad was bound over to circuit court after a preliminary examination on Jan. 4 when Eaton County District Judge Julie O’Neill found there was enough evidence for him to stand trial.
Police were called to Sougstad’s family home on Sept. 24, 2021, for a report of an unknown disturbance, according to the Eaton County Sheriff’s Office.
While on the way, police said they received another 911 call from a neighboring home reporting a child had come to there complaining about an injury to her foot.
The caller then reportedly heard screaming and gunshots coming from the residence next door, police said.
Deputies arrived at the home of the original 911 call and found three residents dead of gunshot wounds, police said. Sougstad was arrested the next day in Ingham County.
Investigators said it is unclear what led to the shooting.
Prior to his preliminary examination, Sougstad underwent several weeks of psychological evaluation at the forensic center.
