Luis Gil knew exactly what happened after throwing the awkward pitch.

In the bottom of the fifth inning in a Wednesday night Triple-A game for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Gil, a top-10 New York Yankees prospect, left the game abruptly after pointing to his elbow in pain. You can watch the video of Gil’s exit from the game here.

According to MLB scout Ian Cundall, Gil was hurt after throwing an 82 mph slider.

UPDATE (11:13 a.m.): Per ESPN’s Marly Rivera, Yankees manager “Aaron Boone says that he has not gotten any info on Luis Gil. Boone says he’ll see Dr. Ahmad tomorrow for an evaluation.”

This was Gil’s first start after being called back down to Triple-A. He recently pitched for the Yankees on May 12, allowing four runs in four innings vs. the Chicago White Sox.

The exact injury for Gil, who turns 24 in June, is still unknown. This is a gloomy sign for him, however, as he has struggled on the Triple-A level this year. Gil has a 7.89 ERA in 21.2 innings pitched.

Gil is the Yankees’ No. 9 prospect, according to MLB Pipeline. He made history in 2021 after he became the first pitcher in MLB history with a scoreless start in his first three appearances. In seven career MLB games with the Yankees, Gil has a 3.78 ERA and 43 strikeouts.

Here’s a scouting report on Gil, courtesy of MLB.com:

Gil has more velocity than most starters, averaging 96 mph with his riding fastball in the Majors while topping out at 100 in the Minors, and holds it for several innings at a time. He has tightened his mid-80s slider into a plus pitch with sharp horizontal break when it’s on, though he sometimes loses feel for it. His third option is a low-90s changeup with some fade and sink but he doesn’t trust it much or use it very often. Though Gil can light up radar guns without much effort in his delivery, he has trouble harnessing his high-octane stuff. He averaged 5.3 walks per nine innings last year (5.8 in the big leagues) and 5.4 in his first five pro seasons. He’ll have to throw a lot more strikes and improve his changeup in order to last as a starter but has closer upside if he lands in the bullpen.
