The landlords were given two options, fix the conditions or demolish the property; they chose to demolish.“The reality is that if you ask anyone, let alone low income farm worker families, hey go find a new rental property in 30 days, they're likely going to end up homeless,” said Tony Nunez, Community Bridges.Nunez with Community Bridges has been helping these families since day one. He said these primarily farm worker families are now facing repercussions for advocating for themselves.“A lot of the tenants there are afraid to reach out for help from the government because this is what happens sometimes when they reach out for help from the government. When they have no other recourse of how to try to fix a very simple issue […] They play such a big role in our community, such a big role in our society, and really, they have no protections,” Nunez said.So far, Community Bridges has raised about $65,000 to help these families relocate. Some families tell KSBW Action News 8 they are unable to find an affordable place to live locally, so they are relocating to places like Madera, Los Banos, and even out of state to Arizona. Others were left homeless and in hotels.But what will happen to the lot once the tenants are gone? Local leaders say they’re fearful it could end up vacant.“Not only is it a disservice for some of those families but also for the town of Pajaro to just have a vacant location and have no progress there,” Nunez said.We reached out to the landlord’s lawyer, and they said their clients, Rose Rentals LLC and The Nunez Family, "have not solidified any definitive course of action with the property at 29 San Juan Road, other than to bring it into compliance with the change in zoning to Light Commercial."
