DETROIT — The A’s placed designated hitter Mitch Moreland on the injured list with left wrist tendinitis and called up outfielder Skye Bolt from Triple-A shortly before Tuesday’s series opener against the Tigers.
Moreland had last played Aug. 26. He was on the field for batting practice Tuesday. The A’s announced the move minutes before the game; Bolt was already with the A’s in Detroit on their taxi squad and thus in uniform and available.
“He’s been dealing with it on and off. Last couple of days, it’s been a little bit worse,” manager Bob Melvin said after the A’s 9-3 win. “When he took batting practice today, he could only take a couple of swings and really swing at one kind of full-out. So unfortunately, had to make that move.”
This is Moreland’s third IL stint this season. He missed 11 games in May with an inflamed rib junction and seven in July for an unspecified reason, which can indicate a stay on the COVID-19-related IL. Moreland is batting .227 with 10 home runs in 81 games in his first season with the A’s, having made 55 of 64 starts against right-handed pitchers. His current 10-day IL stint is retroactive to Aug. 27.
Bolt was recalled for his third stint with the A’s this season. He is hitting .109 in 23 games with one home run with Oakland. Defensively, he has played all three outfield positions in his brief major-league tenure. A switch-hitter, Bolt is batting .387 with a 1.143 OPS in 51 games for Triple-A Las Vegas.
Roster talk: With rosters expanding to a 28-man limit in September, teams can add two players starting Wednesday. Bolt was likely to be one September call-up by the A’s, who now can add two other players.
Catcher Austin Allen and pitchers Grant Holmes, Adam Kolarek and Sam Moll, who were at Triple-A Las Vegas, also met the A’s in Detroit. Those players not called up would form the A’s taxi squad for the rest of the trip. Melvin did not indicate postgame if the A’s would summon another reserve after needing to activate Bolt.
“We’re going to add whatever we feel like is the best pieces, and with Mitch going down, it could look a little different,” Melvin said.
With the Triple-A Aviators scheduled to play through September this year, Melvin noted, players not called up Wednesday will still be getting regular game reps.
“Whoever we go with (Wednesday) doesn’t necessarily mean that’s the way it’s going to be for all of September,” Melvin said. “And maybe there are other guys we want to continue to play (in the minors) right now as well and then maybe factor in if we need something a little bit later when we get home.”
Briefly: Melvin said he could not provide an update on Brown’s condition, as he is “limited on what I can talk about with him.” … Melvin said he would “send a message over” to congratulate the Tigers’ Miguel Cabrera on reaching 500 career homers, adding: “I think he’s hit about 200 of those against us.”
