Colorado Rockies prospects: Colton Welker continues to tear through Triple-A - Purple Row

kmatabunga.blogspot.com

The High-A Spokane Indians continued their hot streak this week, extending their win streak to nine games! The Low-A Fresno Grizzlies split their series with the Modesto Nuts, and the upper minors both posted losing records (although the Isotopes lost 13-11 in extras on Sunday against the Las Vegas Aviators).

In Triple-A, Colton Welker (No. 6 PuRP) has been absolutely tearing it up since his return from suspension. In 12 games with the Isotopes, Welker is slashing .333/.400/.556 with two doubles, a triple, two home runs, 13 RBI, five walks, and 13 strikeouts. He has also reached base in all 12 games, going hitless on August 13 but drawing two walks. While 45 at-bats isn’t a good sample size to draw too many conclusions, it appears that the infielder didn’t miss a beat and he’ll definitely be someone to keep an eye on as September approaches.

Top 30 PuRPs (new list!)

Triple-A: Albuquerque Isotopes (2-5, 42-51 overall)

Fellow Isotope Ryan Vilade (No. 10 PuRP) also had a great week, going 6-for-24 with four doubles, a home run, five RBI, two walks, seven strikeouts and a stolen base. Vilade ranks in the top ten on the team in runs scored (1st), hits (1st), doubles (2nd), home runs (9th), RBI (5th), walks (3rd) and stolen bases (2nd). He also ranks among the top ten in the Triple-A West in runs scored (1st), hits (4th), doubles (T-7th), and stolen bases (T-10th). Considering that this is the 22-year-old’s first year in Triple-A after a year off and skipping over Double-A completely, a .279/.337/.754 (2nd/3rd/3rd on the team) through 85 games is not too shabby. He will also definitely be someone to keep an eye on as September rolls around.

Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats (2-3, 31-63 overall)

RHP Karl Kauffmann (No. 20 PuRP) had a really good outing this week, only allowing two runs on six hits over five innings. However, he did give up a solo homer, hit a batter and walked two but struck out five. Kauffmann has had an up-and-down season since his promotion to Double-A on May 19. In High-A Spokane, he posted a 1-1 record, 2.89 ERA and 0.75 WHIP in just two starts (9 23 innings). In Hartford, he has posted a 1-9 record, 8.60 ERA and 2.26 WHIP in 14 starts (59 23 innings)...yikes!

In May and June combined, he posted an 0-6 record with an 11.30 ERA and 2.51 WHIP. He’s settled back in a bit since then, winning his first game on July 20 and posting a 6.10 ERA and 2.03 WHIP since. He still has a long way to go, but the initial stats are encouraging and hopefully Kauffmann will continue to improve!

High-A: Spokane Indians (6-0, 51-44 overall)

After a rough post-promotion period, Ezequiel Tovar (No. 12 PuRP) seems to be settling in for the Indians. After going just 7-for-39 (.179) to start his High-A career, Tovar has gone 8-for-20 (.400) since then for a total Spokane slash of .254/.290/.356 (up from .179/.220/.231 last week). Tovar also recorded his first High-A home run this week, as well as a third double and seven RBI.

It’s still early, but hopefully this is a sign that Tovar is starting to find his swing in Spokane!

Brenton Doyle (No. 11 PuRP) also had a pretty outstanding week, going 9-for-23 (.391) with a double, two home runs, three RBI, two walks, four strikeouts, and three stolen bases. Doyle is also in the middle of a seven-game hitting streak, and he has four multi-hit games during that stretch.

Doyle ranks in the top ten on the team in runs scored (1st), hits (1st), doubles (2nd), triples (T-4th), homers (2nd), RBI (T-4th), walks (8th), and stolen bases (3rd). He also ranks among the top ten in the High-A West in runs scored (3rd), hits (4th), homers (T-8th), and stolen bases (9th). Hopefully the 23-year-old will continue to perform this well as the season continues!

Low-A: Fresno Grizzlies (3-3, 63-33 overall)

Eddy Diaz (No. 27 PuRP) recorded a hit in all six of his games this week, going 9-for-27 (.333) overall with two doubles, one RBI, one walk, and three strikeouts. He also continued to live up to his “Fast Eddy” nickname, recording four more stolen bases. In total Diaz has 41 stolen bases — leading both the team (top PuRP Zac Veen is second with 30) and the Low-A West.

Diaz started in High-A Spokane and struggled, posting a .192/.284/.231 slash in 78 at-bats before being reassigned to Low-A. Since being reassigned, he has posted a .282/.356/.340 slash and hit his first 2021 home run on July 25. In August alone, Diaz has hit .351/.388/.432. Hopefully this is also a sign of good things to come for “Fast Eddy!”

ACL Rockies (3-2, 29-10 overall)

Adael Amador (No. 18 PuRP) has gotten off to a hot start with the Arizona Complex team. The 18-year-old Dominican shortstop is slashing .288/.384/.452 so far in 104 at-bats. He is currently in the middle of a six-game hitting streak, and has reached base in nine out of eleven games in August. Amador also has eight doubles (which leads the team), three home runs, and eight stolen bases in 13 attempts.

Amador was the Rockies’ top international free agent signing in 2019 and has thus far performed well in high first professional showing. Hopefully he will continue to do so!
