The A’s recalled right-hander Paul Blackburn from Triple-A Las Vegas on Wednesday to take the roster spot of ace Chris Bassitt, who Tuesday night was struck in the face by a line drive during the second inning of a 9-0 loss to the Chicago White Sox.

Blackburn, an Antioch native, is scheduled to start for the A’s in Chicago on Wednesday night.

Bassitt was placed on the 10-day injured list after being released from Rush University Medical Center overnight. The A’s announced that Bassitt is scheduled to undergo facial surgery next week.

Lefty Cole Irvin was originally set to start Wednesday, will instead start Thursday’s series finale against the White Sox.

Blackburn, 27, has spent parts of the past four seasons in the Majors, as a spot starter and reliever. This will be his 19th big league start.

In 17 games (16 starts) in Triple-A this season, the 27-year-old has amassed a 4-7 record with a 4.97 ERA and .311 opponents batting average. Blackburn has struck out 80 and walked 27 in 88.2 innings.

In addition to pitching the second-most innings among all Triple-A West pitchers this year, Blackburn ranks fifth in ERA and strikeouts.

The righty made his Major League debut with Oakland in 2017 and owns a 5-7 record with a 5.69 ERA in 21 games, including 18 starts, since then.

A’s General Manager David Forst said Wednesday that it is not yet clear how the A’s might fill Bassitt’s turn in the rotation moving forward.

“We’ll take it day to day,” he said.

MARTE LOOKS TO STAY HOT ON THE BASES

Since he was acquired from the Miami Marlins on July 28 in exchange for 23-year-old lefty Jesus Luzardo, outfielder Starling Marte has become an indispensable piece to the lineup.

In just 17 games with the A’s, Marte has stolen 11 bases on as many attempts and hit .365 with two home runs and 11 RBI.

Marte’s 11 steals are tied with Dave Collins in 1985 for the most in the first 17 games of a career in Oakland. His perfect 11-for-11 on stolen bases to start his A’s career is also tied for the fourth-longest such streak to start a tenure with the club since the AL started tracking caught stealing in 1920, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Marte will look to keep his stolen base streak alive on Wednesday night in Chicago when the A’s take on AL Cy Young candidate Lance Lynn. Lynn, a righty, owns a 2.26 ERA this year in 21 starts. He’s struck out 137 batters in 119.2 innings.
