Amid a report his activation was imminent, Alex Bregman returned to Minute Maid Park on Saturday afternoon for an already scheduled off day during his minor league rehab assignment — which he is scheduled to resume on Sunday night in Sugar Land.
Bregman played seven innings, struck a three-run home run and took four at-bats in Class AAA Sugar Land’s 12-7 victory against the Oklahoma City Dodgers. He had not appeared in a game since Aug. 7.
“I’m feeling 100 percent really good,” Bregman said on Saturday. “I’m feeling great. Getting work done today and that’s it. But overall, everything is good. Moving in the right direction and have been the entire time. It was a difficult injury to come back from.”
An MLB Network report on Saturday afternoon said the Astros were “expected to activate” Bregman “soon, perhaps Sunday or Monday.” Bregman said the report was “news to me.” General manager James Click said Bregman is scheduled to play for Class AAA Sugar Land on Sunday.
“He’s been adamant about the fact he feels ready to go,” Click said. “Hopefully it’s pretty short but, listen, we’re taking the long view on this. The priority is not getting back as soon as possible. For right now, the priority is making sure this is 100 percent behind him so he can play at his normal 110 percent that he plays for the next month and a half and hopefully beyond. That’s the priority.”
Sugar Land’s proximity to Minute Maid Park allowed Bregman to visit with the team’s medical staff on Saturday afternoon. He took pregame infield and batting practice with the team prior to its game against the Mariners — the 55th contest Bregman has missed since straining his left quad on June 16.
Click did not reveal how many more minor league games Bregman will need before rejoining the major league team. Houston has gone 32-22 with a .759 team OPS during his absence.
Chandler Rome joined the Houston Chronicle in 2018 to cover the Astros after spending one year in Tuscaloosa covering Alabama football - during which Nick Saban asked if he attended college. He did, at LSU, where he covered the Tigers baseball team for nearly four years. He covered most of the Astros' 2015 playoff run, too, as an intern for MLB.com
